Chapter 05 · Dangerous game

Dangerous game hunting

Some animals ask more of you. Dangerous game hunting at Buffelkraal is done properly — the right calibre, a back-up rifle and a professional hunter beside you every step of the way. It is serious hunting, done carefully, legally and with respect for the animal.

Buffalo

Our dangerous game hunting is built around buffalo with the heavier species available by arrangement. These hunts are slower than a plains game safari: more tracking, more patience, and far more time spent reading sign than covering ground. When it comes together you will know exactly what you worked for.

Calibres and back-up

For buffalo we work with the classic heavy calibres, and we ask that you are genuinely comfortable behind your own rifle before you arrive — regular practice matters more than the badge on the barrel. If travelling with a heavy rifle is impractical, talk to us about hiring one here. Your professional hunter carries a back-up rifle and will be positioned for it, always.

Permits, quota and the giraffe question

Dangerous game is hunted strictly within quota and under permit, and availability changes from season to season. Giraffe hunting is also possible by arrangement — please ask us about the current requirements, permits and availability before you start planning your trip, so that nothing is promised that cannot be delivered.

What we ask of you

• Proven shooting ability with the rifle you will hunt with.
• A real level of fitness — dangerous game hunts can be long and physical.
• An honest conversation about your experience, so we plan the right hunt.
• Respect for the final say of your professional hunter, on every shot and every decision.
