Chapter 04 · Plains game

Plains game hunting

The Waterberg is plains game country. Wide valleys, thick bushveld and open ridges hold a remarkable variety of species, which is why so many of our guests come back for a second and a third animal. Whether it is your first impala or the kudu you have dreamed about for years, the approach never changes: hunt properly, and take the animal you came for.

Species you can expect

Impala, blesbok, duiker, warthog, kudu, gemsbok, blue wildebeest, zebra, eland and red hartebeest, with further species available by arrangement. Tell us what is on your wish list and we will confirm exactly what is on offer for your dates, together with the current trophy fees.

How we hunt them

Early mornings and late afternoons are spent glassing and stalking. We work slowly into the wind, using termite mounds, thorn trees and the lie of the land to get close — and if the animal wins that round, we simply try again. Around midday, blinds over waterholes are often the better bet. You hunt with your own professional hunter and trackers, so the pace is yours.

Rifle, bow or a mix of both: many guests hunt plains game with a rifle early in the trip and switch to a blind with a bow later in the week.

After the shot

Recovery, field dressing and transport to the skinning shed all happen on the day, and we walk you through each step if it is your first African animal. Skins and trophies are prepared and salted in camp, and we can put you in touch with taxidermists and shippers for the trip home. We do not waste what we take — the meat goes to good use.

What to bring

• Binoculars — the single most useful thing in your bag.
• Layers in bush colours and boots you have already walked in; the terrain is uneven.
• A realistic level of fitness — we will match the terrain to what you can comfortably do.
• Your wish list — send it before you travel so we can plan the days around it.
